Update: Accident at The Entry of Departure Car Zone at Tuas Checkpoint

The Police have arrested a 42-year-old Singaporean male for dangerous driving causing grievous hurt and for drink driving, following the road traffic accident at Tuas Checkpoint on 24 March 2023.

2.          Preliminary investigations revealed that the Singaporean male driver was allegedly intoxicated and driving at high speed up the viaduct leading to Tuas Checkpoint. He purportedly lost control of his vehicle and crashed into the Observation Point (OP), causing his vehicle to flip over and hit the 28-year-old Auxiliary Police Officer (APO) who was on duty.

3.          ICA’s First Response Team (FRT) was dispatched to the scene to render necessary assistance and cordon off the site. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) and the Traffic Police (TP) were also activated. The APO sustained a severe head injury and was unconscious, while the driver suffered lacerations. Both were conveyed to the National University hospital. ICA and Certis are in contact with the APO’s family members to render the necessary assistance and support.

4.          ICA officers stationed at the checkpoints, including APOs, carry out their duties to safeguard Singapore’s borders. Motorists using the checkpoints need to drive safely and abide by traffic rules not just for their own safety but also the safety of our officers. We will not hesitate to take strict enforcement action against blatant breach of such rules.

5.          Police investigations are ongoing. The vehicle was seized and the driver’s driving licence has been suspended with immediate effect.

6.          The offence of dangerous driving causing grievous hurt under Section 64 (1) (2A) of the Road Traffic Act 1961 carries an imprisonment term of not less than one year and not more than five years; and where the person is a repeat offender, an imprisonment term of not less than two years and not more than 10 years. Offenders are also liable to disqualification from driving all classes of vehicles.

7.          The offence of driving while under the influence of drink under Section 67(1) of the Road Traffic Act 1961 carries a fine of not less than $2,000 and not more than $10,000, and an imprisonment term not exceeding 12 months, or both and, in the case of a second or subsequent conviction, to a fine of not less than $5,000 and not more than $20,000, and imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years, or both. Offenders are also liable to disqualification from driving all classes of vehicles.
