‘Operation Sunrise’ at Tuas Checkpoint

Today, Tuas Checkpoint clears about 123,000 travellers daily during weekdays. 55 per cent of these, about 68,000, are motorcyclists. This is more than the 65,000 motorcyclists who used Tuas Checkpoint daily during pre-COVID. Tuas Checkpoint is now the main crossing for motorcyclists travelling between Singapore and Malaysia during peak hours.

2.          During the weekday peak period between 5am and 9am, about 22,000 motorcyclists use the Tuas Checkpoint daily

3.          To speed up motorcycle clearance, Tuas Checkpoint implemented ‘Operation Sunrise’ in May 2023. This overcomes the infrastructural constraints at Tuas Checkpoint by allowing arriving motorcyclists to also use the automated lanes at the departure zone.  Every weekday morning, ICA officers will divert some of the arriving motorcyclists from the Second Link to the departure motorcycle zone for automated immigration clearance. After which, they will exit Tuas Checkpoint onto the Ayer Rajah Expressway.

4.          Prior to ‘Operation Sunrise’, Tuas Checkpoint operated 40 automated lanes and up to nine car counters to clear arriving motorcycles at the arrival zone. With this new initiative, the automated clearance capacity for arriving motorcycles during the morning peak period has increased from 40 automated lanes to 70 automated lanes. This has helped to reduce the queuing and clearance time for motorcyclists and improved clearance efficiency. It has also led to fewer instances of motorcycle queues ballooning along the Second Link, which obstructs the other modes of conveyance, such as trucks, from entering Tuas Checkpoint, resulting in massive congestion and delays of cargo coming into Singapore.

5.          ‘Operation Sunrise’ is part of ICA’s efforts to address traffic and clearance congestion and enhance travellers’ experience at the land checkpoints.
